I know you guys aren't on DA, but I've just found out they do comps! (seriously, the forums there are massive and it's insanely hard to find stuff!) They do literature competitions too, all free to enter because all you have to do is put the piece in your gallery.
I'm gonna enter a horror story comp that's going on at the mo... If I can finish it in time. Prizes are usually subscriptions and artworks and whatnot, which is still cool. Plus it's another place to promote your writing, which is always good.
