Wow, there's loads!
Em_J
Just checking some of these out. One is for 'Christian friendly horror' what the hell is that?!
redwinegoblin
Christian friendly horror?! I really can't imagine what that would be! Might have to go have a look, which one is it?
Em_J
Fear and Trembling mag.
redwinegoblin
Looks quite interesting! Not read any of it yet, but I think the Christian stuff is just no sex n' violence n' gore...
Em_J
Oh right. I just read the bit where it said about not offending Christians!
redwinegoblin
Yeah, no God stuff either , so quite traditional I might get round to reading some of it at some point...
Their formatting rules are really prescriptive though, it's all very formal!
Em_J
Yeah I'm not bothering with that one. I'm just going through the list at the mo. I'm up to lit up magazine.
April_Rose
Christian friendly horror? Sounds strange! I didn't look at that one yet...might just leave it!
Em_J
That Morpheus tales one looks quite good.
April_Rose
http://www.themonstersnextdoor.com/devilsfood.html
This one looks good as well, they're looking for submissions for an anthology and they pay!
Em_J
I don't think I looked at that one, musta missed it!
April_Rose
It was a link on the main page, I had to scroll down to find it I think! it's pretty specific guidelines, but it could be worth a shot!
Em_J
Yeah tis pretty specific, I just looked! Sounds quite interesting though.
April_Rose
Yeah, they pay $25 which isn't bad, plenty of anthologies don't pay anything! Could be a good one to work on as I don't think I've tried anything like that before. They're lookng for pretty long stories!
Em_J
Yeah, that might be quite hard! Might have a go. I wanted to write something about someone getting eaten cos I've just read a couple of stories like that and wanted to have a go myself.
April_Rose
Cool, that'll help with the inspiration then, I've no idea where I'd start!
I've written 5k word stories before, so i should be able to, though everything I've written recently has been pretty short You should be ok with it too I'd say!
Em_J
Everything I write at the mo seems to be getting shorter and shorter!
I read a short story called Feeders and Eaters recently (by Neil Gaiman, of course!) and that grossed me right out! Was brilliant though. Had this little old lady in it who ate raw meat and it made her younger. She kept this cat alive so that she could feed off it, and the bloke who finds the cat kills it cos it's just manky, like half dead, half eaten, so then the woman eats his arm.
And then what I'm reading at the mo is a proper novel, but it's got trees in it who eat people.
April_Rose
Cool! I like the sound of the trees eating people...the half eaten cat sounds hilarious!
We could do what we usually do now, post bits as we go along and if we're below the 3000 words we could always suggest ways for each other to flesh ( Been around sis's boyfriend all day & he's terrible for puns!) out the story?
Em_J
It wasn't hilarious, it was rank!
Yeah I'm up for that!
April_Rose
Maybe it's just the way you describe it, it sounds funny!
Cool!
Em_J
It was disturbing!
Ok, gonna have to think of some good monsters now!
April_Rose
Yeah, me too! I've no time for reading to get inspiration at the moment, got four 3000 word essays due on friday 13th February, between that & RPG time and occasionally talking to hubby I haven't time to read, it's strange!
Em_J
Well I'm not really sleeping, so I tend to be reading then! Also been reading while I get the rats out for a run round, though I usually get interrupted by having to go fish Pancakes out of the laundry basket.
April_Rose
Ah yeah, insomnia can be handy for reading! Yeah, pets seem to take up a fair bit of my time as well.
Em_J
Yeah but they're cute so tis ok!
I'm just gonna nip onto the computer so I can print off the guidelines for that Devil's food thing. Back in a sec!
April_Rose
Ok!
Yeah, much as I complain about my lot, they are lovely. Five of them now altogether though!
Em_J
Five's quite a lot!
Just reading the guidelines again, they want a synopsis too!
April_Rose
Yeah, I hate synopses! Still, if we post the stories here we coudl always try to write them for each other?
Yeah, two dogs, three cats...the dogs are a lot of work, thankfully the cats are pretty low maintenance!
Em_J
Yeah that's a good idea. Might have a go at starting mine tonight then!
I saw my dad's cats the other day. Actually touched one too. And it attacked me.
April_Rose
Cool, I'll try to come up with a monster anyway, don't think I'll get started tonight but it'll give me something to do tomorrow when I'm taking a break from the essays!
It was probably just being playful!
Em_J
It was being evil!
April_Rose
Well, yeah, but that's just what cats do!
Em_J
Eeeeeeeeeevil!
April_Rose
But the good kind of evil!
This one looks good too
http://www.everydayfiction.com/submit-story/
They publish one a day so I figure there's a decent chance of getting published! And they pay $3
Em_J
Flash fiction though, can't do that!
April_Rose
Why?
Em_J
Just can't get it to work ever!
April_Rose
It's up to 1000 words though, that's not too bad?
Em_J
Possibly! Anything I write lately tends to be about 1500 I think.
April_Rose
Yeah, sometimes stories of a certain length tend to come for me too, for a while it was the really long ones, now it's mostly under 1000! I thought you had a few pieces under 1000.
Em_J
Yeah but not like complete things. Well, I have two short short stories, but they don't really have plots. Which is my usual problem lately!
April_Rose
They don't say anything about plots on that site I don't think!
This one looks good too:
http://www.flashingswords.com/writers.php
They're looking for fantasy and there's a bit down the page where they list the types of stories that'll be rejected, and one of the kinds is where a helpless female has to be rescued!
Em_J
Ah yeah I looked at that one. I've printed out a few guidelines for a few of these that I might submit things to.
April_Rose
I should do that maybe, I never print stuff off, I bookmark it or post it here or whatever, then forget about it!
Em_J
Yeah that's what I usually do, that's why I decided to print it this time!
April_Rose
TThen again, there's always loads of papers lying around, hubby's work stuff and that, so if I printed it off it would still end up getting lost!
Em_J
Mine's gonna go in my nice new filing cabinet!
April_Rose
I've a study where things could go, but there's no heating in that room so I only go up when I want to use the printer or get a book at this time of the year!
Em_J
Well it's handy on here anyway.
April_Rose
Yeah, it's just a matter of remembering to look back through old posts, I'd completely forgotten about that Turner Maxwell thing till you reminded me!
Em_J
Have you thought of an idea for the story yet?! I have nothing!
April_Rose
I have nothing too! Can't work out a monster, I think once I have that I'll be able to get started, but I keep drawing a blank. I'd like to come up with something unusual as there are so many vampire/zombie etc stories out there and I don't think I'd be able to make mine stand out enough....
Em_J
I've not really been thinking of a monster, I might just make one up. I just can't really think of any sort of story or characters or setting or anything!
April_Rose
I've got an idea for characters, well, the human characters. Am thinking of basing it around a family, all grown ups, that are all home for some reason, maybe Xmas or some kind of family occasion, when news breaks about the monsters...then it'll be the different ways they react to the fear.
Em_J
Yeah that sounds good. Gah, I'm so stuck!! I read the 'what they want' bit again and the main thing it says is the threat of being eaten. So not actually being eaten. Tis tricky!
April_Rose
Yeah, though I figure at least some of them could get eaten....
You could develop your monster hunter story into it? That's got a good lead character!
Em_J
I did think that actually, but I don't think that'd work cos it's quite light and it'd have to go quite dark. Did that make sense?!
April_Rose
Yeah, I know what you mean...could be an interesting turn, if the hunter becomes the hunted, but it might feel a bit disjointed or something?
Em_J
Yeah it's not got the right tone I don't think.
I was thinking about eyeballs, I've got eyeballs in my head ( ) but not sure what sort of story I could make out of that!
April_Rose
Strange thing to have in your head ( )! Maybe the monster doesn't eat eyeballs? Like, that's all that's left behind of the body?
Em_J
Oh yeah, that'd be gross! Hmm, might think about that.
April_Rose
Gross can work!
Em_J
Yeah I like gross!
April_Rose
Me too, well, in stories, not such a big fan on TV or films!
Em_J
Yeah, no I don't really like it in TV or films, weird! I think I've got an idea for a gross little scene involving eyeballs now, but not sure how it'll fit into anything else!
April_Rose
Write it anyway if you have it in your head, you can always see if you get more ideas to fit around it later, once you have it down?
Em_J
Yeah I'll do that later. At least I've got one idea now anyway!
April_Rose
Yeah that's cool! I still don't have a monster, but I'm trying to get started on writing anyway, see if I can flesh out the characters a bit.
Em_J
You could do some monster research, I found a good site the other day but didn't bookmark it or anything! I'm quite keen on ghouls lately, but they only tend to hang around graveyards so might not work in this type of story. I've got a few books on monsters and whatnot I might go through.
April_Rose
Yeah, research wouldn't be a bad idea! There must be a few decent websites out there.
Em_J
Try this: www.monstrous.com
April_Rose
Cool, the monstropedia bit looks good, I'm bound to find a good monster there! Thanks!
Em_J
No probs.
