Favourite book characters?

Who are your favourite books characters? You can only pick five but it can be from any genre.

Mine are (in no particular order!):

1. Mayweed. From William Horwood's Duncton books. He's a disease ridden ugly mole, who refers to himself in the third person and won't shut up!
2. Etta. From Robin Hobb's Liveship books. She's a whore turned pirate, completely kick-ass!
3. Bartimaeus. From Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy. He's a sarcastic demon.
4. Daenerys. From George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. She's also very kick-ass and has pet dragons!
5. Balthamos. From Phillip Pullman's HDM. A wimpy angel!

Hmm, good topic!

Ok, let me think about this...

Right, in no particular order:

1. Polgara the Sorceress in the Belgariad and Mallorean books by David Eddings. She's hilarious, firm but with a mischeivious side.
2. Ayla from the Clan of the Cave Bear books by Jean M Auel, a sort of fantasy series set in stone-age europe, she's the heroine, has a great way of thinking and because she was brought up by neanderthals sometimes doesn't understand the way normal humans relate to each other.
3. Becky Sharpe in Vanity Fair - she's manipulative, but she sure is resourceful! She's a well drawn character, funny and nasty.
4. Conseil in 20000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. He's sarcastic and opinionated, but always deferential alongside it, a hilarious combination, and he carries it off by being so knowledgeable.
5. Zenia in The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood - she's flighty and poisonous, but powerful, a kind of love-to-hate character
